localized  Localized Avalanche Hazard

Forecasted Weather Influences

A few light snow showers overnight will become heavier during the day. Winds will be moderate North-Westerly. Freezing level lowering to 500m, minus 2 degrees Celcius at summits.

Forecasted Snow Stability and Avalanche Hazard

Slightly cooler temperatures will help maintain good stability in many places. The forecasted snow showers may result in pockets of new, marginally bonded windslab forming on steep East to South aspects above 900m, where accumulations are greatest there will be an increased localised hazard. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Observed Avalanche Hazard - Sat 13/03/2010

Observed Weather Influences

Freezing close to summits and overcast for much of the day with a light drizzle below 800m. Winds were moderate to strong mainly North-Westerly.

Observed Snow Stability and Avalanche Hazard

Fluctuating temperatures are helping to consolidate the snowpack which has become moist below 800m. Very thin and localised accumulations of humid windslab lie on steep North-East through East to South-East aspects above 1000m. The snowpack is thawing at lower altitudes and cornices are sagging. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.

Mountain Conditions
Snow DistributionThawing conditions with the snowpack becoming moist below 800m. Cover remains good at upper elevations.
IcingDespite a depleted snow cover large quantities of ice remain. The slightly cooler conditions will help retain build up.
