AVALANCHE HAZARD MON 05/01/2009

A thin layer of fresh snow lies above 700m. There are areas of windslab in sheltered locations above 900m on a variety of aspects, mainly West through North to East. These areas are generally small and avoidable. The old snowpack remains stable. The avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2).

AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 06/01/2009

Snow showers are expected overnight and during the day with a strengthening South West wind. During the day the freezing level is expected to rise to the summits. Poorly to moderately bonded windslab will be deposited, mainly on North to East facing slopes above 800m. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3).

CLIMBING CONDITIONS

SNOW DISTRIBUTION: A thin covering of fresh snow above 700m. Old snow is mainly in North to East facing corries above 800m.
ICING: Some water courses are partly frozen.
COMMENT: The old snow remains very hard. Water ice is present on footpaths and across hillsides, extensive in places.
