Snow and Avalanche Report Issued at 18.45 hrs Sunday 26/11/2000 A slow rise in temperature has affected Highland ranges throughout the day. This has been least evident in the Northern Cairngorms, where summit temperatures remained below freezing, resulting in precipitation falling as snow above 950 metres. New snow amounts have been quite small, but some new slab build-up was noted on Northerly aspects above 1000 metres. In Lochaber freezing level has been around the highest summits. There has been a general slow stabilisation of the snowpack. The avalanche hazard in areas where substantial accumulations exist, mainly above 900 metres in the Cairngorms, Creag Meagaidh, Lochaber and some higher locations in Glencoe, is Considerable (Category 3). Avalanche Hazard Outlook Mild conditions with some rain will affect Highland ranges on Monday 27/11/2000 and Tuesday 28/11/2000. There will be a hazard of wet snow avalanches, on slopes of most aspects above 900 metres. Colder conditions from Wednesday 29/11/2000 will bring about some stabilisation of the snowpack, although snow showers at higher levels may cause some fresh slab accumulation. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). Note: this Report will be reviewed on Thursday 30/11/2000. Detailed Reports for 5 areas will commence on 20/12/2000. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
