Snow and Avalanche Report Issued at 16.45 hrs Friday 1/12/2000 Mild conditions with some rain have maintained the depletion of the snowpack in Highland ranges. The avalanche hazard in areas where substantial accumulations exist, mainly above 900 metres in the Cairngorms, Creag Meagaidh, Lochaber and some higher locations in Glencoe, is Moderate (Category 2). Some easy gullies are still complete. Northern ranges such as the Torridon hills have less snow. Avalanche Hazard Outlook Saturday 2/12/2000 The snowpack across Highland ranges will continue to thaw and reduce, with strong mainly Southerly winds and some rain. Freezing levels will be above the summits. Any remaining cornices will be subject to collapse. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Category 2). There will, however, be an increasing hazard of full-depth avalanche on slopes of any aspect, independent of the general avalanche hazard and particularly where the snowpack lies on rock slabs or smooth ground. Note: Detailed Reports for 5 areas will commence on 20/12/2000. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
