Snow and Avalanche Report Issued at 17.15 hrs Monday 11/12/2000 Colder conditions over the past 48 hours have led to some new snow deposits mainly above 950 metres in Highland ranges, especially in the Cairngorms and Lochaber. These accumulations are mainly on Northerly aspects and lie on the remnants of the old snowpack, which is hard and icy. However, new snow amounts are small. The avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2). Main existing snow accumulations are on corrie headwalls but some easy gullies are still complete. Northern ranges such as the Torridon hills and Skye have little snow. Avalanche Hazard Outlook Tuesday 12/12/2000 Fresh snowfall above 900 metres on strong S to SW winds will affect all Highland mountain areas from early morning on Tuesday. Accumulations are likely to be locally significant, particularly on N and E aspects. Slab accumulations will lie in many places above 900 metres on old snow-ice and in these locations, avalanches are likely. The Cairngorms, Creag Meagaidh and Lochaber and some higher locations in Glencoe will be most affected. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). Note: This Report will be reviewed on Tuesday 12/12/2000. Detailed daily Reports for 5 areas will commence on 20/12/2000. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
