Snow and Avalanche Report Issued at 16.45 hrs Wednesday 13/12/2000 Showers have affected most Highland ranges during the day and although occasionally heavy, especially in the West, they have not resulted in significant additional snow accumulations. In most areas, only a dusting of new snow overlies the remaining old snowpack, which is hard and icy. Greatest deposits exist on corrie headwalls above 900 metres, mainly on Northerly aspects. Lochaber and the Northern Cairngorms have most snow and in these locations some easy gullies are still complete. The avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2). Avalanche Hazard Outlook Thursday 14/12/2000 A cold day with strong W becoming NW winds will affect Highland ranges on Thursday. Most Highland ranges will see snow showers, occasionally heavy, leading to some windslab build-up on all North-East through to Southerly aspects above 900 metres. Snow may fall at all levels as the day progresses. Slab accumulations will lie in many places on old snow-ice. The Cairngorms, Creag Meagaidh and Lochaber along with some higher locations in Glencoe will be most affected. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). Glenshee will have a drier day, although there may be some localised slab accumulations. Comment: climbing conditions are poor to non-existent in all areas, although colder conditions are allowing re-freezing of turf on buttresses. Note: This Report will be reviewed on Thursday 14/12/2000. Detailed daily Reports for 5 areas will commence on 20/12/2000. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
