NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 6/1/01 Calm conditions with sunshine in the morning have led to little change in snow conditions. On some aspects, mainly E and SE above 950 metres, some recent accumulations exist, but these do not constitute a hazard. The recent strong temperature gradients have gone and although they have left weak faceted layers lower down in the snowpack, a strong near-surface melt-freeze layer binds the whole snow cover. The avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 7/1/01 Moderate W to NW winds with little new snowfall, will bring little change to the snowpack. Sub-surface weaker layers will continue to exist, but these are unlikely to constitute a hazard except on a few isolated, steep, convex slopes on mainly E and S aspects above 950 metres. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Category 2). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: General cover above 850 metres. Plateau still has many rocky areas. ICING: Improving. Snow and hoar frost on crags. COMMENT: Still lean conditions. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 6/1/01 Localised accumulations of weakly bonded soft windslab exist in sheltered locations. Greatest accumulations are on corrie headwalls, scarp slopes and the tops of gullies with a N, NE and E aspect above 900 metres. The avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). Soft cornices forming at the tops of sheltered slopes. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 7/1/01 Snow with a W/NW airflow overnight and during Sunday will form fresh deposits of unstable snow in sheltered locations. Greatest accumulations will be on scarp slopes, corrie headwalls and the tops of gullies with a N through to SE aspect above 900 metres. Avalanches are likely in these locations. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). Cornices will become prone to collapse. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Fresh snow expected above 850m. ICING: Improving slowly. COMMENT: Careful route choice required with regard to exits and tops of gullies. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 6/1/01 Showers overnight have deposited new snow above 500m. Above 850m soft slab is lying on a breakable crust which has formed on the old snowpack. Surface instabilities exist in the shallow new snow. The underlying old snow is potentially unstable on steep north west through to east facing corrie headwalls and in sheltered summit gullies. Avalanche hazard Considerable (Category 3). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 7/1/01 Snow overnight will fall on ground above 850m. Further layers of windslab will accumulate on north to east facing corrie headwalls and in sheltered summit gullies. These deposits will be weakly bonded particularly where old snow underlies. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: New snow above 500m. ICING: Ice on rocks above 850m. COMMENT: Summit buttresses quite wintry although turf not fully frozen. SOUTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 6/1/01 The snowpack is generally well bonded with areas of moderately bonded snow remaining on steeper slopes mainly on N aspects. The avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 7/1/01 After a brief rise in the freezing level there will be a return to cooler conditions during the day. New accumulations will not acquire much depth but a few areas of moderately bonded snow will persist mainly N aspects. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Category 2). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Patchy cover up to 900m above this is good but thinner on exposed slopes. ICING: Variable in quality although brief thaw freeze cycle will help. COMMENT: Ski touring is reasonable using selected slopes. CREAG MEAGAIDH AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 6/1/01 With only a trace of fresh snow and very light winds there has been little change to the current snow conditions. Areas of moderately well bonded hard slab persist on North West through North East to East aspects above 850 metres although the relatively mild conditions are aiding the consolidation process. The avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 7/1/01 Light snow showers on a strong West to North West wind will cause shallow windslab deposits to form on North East to South aspects above 900 metres. Existing hard slab will also remain on North West aspects. With such light snowfall there will be little change to the overall situation. The avalanche hazard will remain Moderate (Category 2). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Main cover above 750 metres. Difficult underfoot in places. ICING: There was plenty on the Post Face but the car park was full today (Saturday 6.1.01) so it's probably been hacked to bits. COMMENT: Base of ice routes were running with water today (Saturday 6.1.01.). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
