NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 27/2/01 Only light snow amounts fell in the past 24 hours. Moderate E winds prevailed over the tops but were of highly variable direction in the Northern Corries. This has produced an easy shearing slab that is even more varied in distribution than yesterday. The main accumulation zone has been between 700 to 1000 metres and many plateau exits are being scoured. The avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 28/2/01 Snow showers will occur on Wednesday with a wind change from NE to N. The slab instability will continue to exist on numerous aspects, approach slopes and some gully exits. Some areas will still have deep foot penetrations with snow available for transport. There are also slopes of similar aspect that will remain scoured or have the slab instability. Avalanches are likely above 700 metres on any aspect that has the slab. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Plateau pretty well scoured. ICING: Snow-ice good and ice quality reasonable, quantity limited. COMMENT: Some heavy travel on foot. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 27/2/01 Strong NE winds overnight and this morning have redistributed large amounts of snow into sheltered locations. Greatest accumulations are on SE through S to W aspects, notably on scarp slopes and at the tops of gullies. Sheltered locations on other aspects are also affected. The avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 28/2/01 Strong NE winds will continue overnight before easing on Wednesday. Snow redistribution will continue, with slab continuing to build in sheltered locations. Greatest accumulations will be on SE through S to W aspects, notably on scarp slopes and at the tops of gullies. Avalanches are likely in these locations. Sheltered locations on other aspects will also be affected. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Fresh snow at all levels. ICING: Remaining cold at all levels. COMMENT: Large areas of snow-ice still present on windward slopes. GLENCOE As part of the current precautions against Foot and Mouth Disease, The National Trust for Scotland have requested that the public refrain from use of the land on their Glencoe estate. In the public interest, the sportscotland Avalanche Information Service is therefore suspending the issue of daily Snow and Avalanche Reports for Glencoe until further notice. SOUTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 27/2/01 Strong winds rather than snowfall have been the dominating feature in the current situation. Hard slab is to be found in very sheltered locations on SE through to W aspects above 650 metres. Stability of these deposits remains poor. The avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). Newly formed cornices are unstable. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 28/2/01 There will be a little fresh snow and further drifting overnight with drier and calmer weather on Wednesday. The current situation will be maintained with unstable windslab existing in very sheltered locations on SE through to W aspects above 650 metres. Cross loading of will also occur. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). Cornices will continue to be a hazard. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Cover from the valley but much wind scouring has occurred. ICING: Variable in both quality and quantity. COMMENT: Exposed slopes are icy and stable. CREAG MEAGAIDH As part of the current precautions against Foot and Mouth Disease, Scottish Natural Heritage have closed with apologies the Creag Meagaidh estate.
