NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS WED 28/2/01 Snow showers have not made a significant difference to new load but there are many areas that have up to 1 metre of unstable slab. The distribution of the slab and the unconsolidated snow is highly variable by aspect. Even with the N wind there are areas on N aspect, particularly approaching climbs in the Northern Corries, that have the unstable slab. The slab is not releasing in the present conditions. The avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK THU 1/3/01 Light winds from the NE and light snow amounts are forecast in continuing cool conditions. There will be little change in poor stability. The transition from areas of unconsolidated snow that does not shear to areas with soft slab that shears easily needs careful observation. Most areas above 1000 metres on N aspect will remain scoured. On all other aspects avalanches are likely on steep convex terrain from 750 metres up. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: ICING: COMMENT: This Report applies to N. Corries only. Please use N. Corries footpath for access and disinfect boots where facilities exist. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS WED 28/2/01 Localised areas of hard windslab are present on many aspects. The distribution of this windslab is very variable although main accumulations are on E through S to W aspects. Extensive areas of snow-ice are also present on many aspects. The avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK THU 1/3/01 Cold settled conditions are expected throughout the forecast period. Little change is expected to the existing snowpack. Localised areas of windslab will be present on many slope aspects. Main accumulations will be on E through S to W aspects. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). Extensive areas of snow-ice will remain on many aspects. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Fresh snow at all levels. ICING: Remaining cold at all levels. COMMENT: Foot and Mouth precautions: avalanche observations only being carried out on Aonach Mor until further notice. GLENCOE As part of the current precautions against Foot and Mouth Disease, The National Trust for Scotland have requested that the public refrain from use of the land on their Glencoe estate. SOUTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS WED 28/2/01 Deep areas of hard slab are to be found mainly in sheltered locations on SE through to W aspects above 650 metres. Some consolidation is evident but unstable faceted crystals were noted in the snowpack. Exposed slopes are icy and stable. The avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). Newly formed cornices are unstable. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK THU 1/3/01 Conditions will remain much the same. Deep areas of windslab will be found mainly on SE through to W aspects above 650 metres. Softer deposits and surface layers will be poorly bonded. Recently exposed slopes will remain very icy and stable. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). Cornices will continue to be a hazard. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Cover from the valley but much wind scouring has occurred. ICING: Good snow-ice on some slopes and gullies. COMMENT: Foot and Mouth precautions; Please observe restrictions that are in place. CREAG MEAGAIDH As part of the current precautions against Foot and Mouth Disease, Scottish Natural Heritage have closed with apologies the Creag Meagaidh estate.
