NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS THU 1/3/01 A clear cold night has produced a new layer of surface hoar that is widespread through the Northern Corries. The snowpack where scoured is strong and stable. The areas of slab accumulation on S, E and W aspect are still unstable. The slab continues to exist on those variable aspects from 750 to 1000 metres. The avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK FRI 2/3/01 The weather for the next 24 hours will continue to be clear and cold. Although there are areas on most aspects of unconsolidated snow there will be little wind for snow transport. The slab that is fairly easy to identify on the affected terrain will continue to be unstable. Areas that have been heavily scoured will remain stable. LOCHABER As part of the current precautions against Foot and Mouth Disease, landowners on Ben Nevis and Aonach Mor have requested that climbers and walkers refrain from use of the land on their estates. British Alcan, the landowners on Aonach Mor, have also instructed Nevis Range Ski Area that climbers and walkers should not have access to the Aonach Mor gondola. GLENCOE As part of the current precautions against Foot and Mouth Disease, The National Trust for Scotland have requested that the public refrain from use of the land on their Glencoe estate. Some consolidation is evident but unstable faceted crystals were noted in the snowpack and widespread surface hoar is present. Exposed slopes are icy and stable. Deep areas of windslab will be found mainly on SE through to W aspects above 650 metres. Softer deposits and surface layers will be poorly bonded. Exposed slopes will remain very icy and stable. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). Cornices will continue to be a hazard.
