NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS FRI 2/3/01 Another cold clear night and although the wind picked up from the SSW there has been significant growth in surface hoar. The continuing cold temperatures have also produced some faceting crystal growth, down about six centimetres where tested. Neither the surface hoar nor the facets are a hazard yet. In most parts of the Northern Corries the snowpack is stable. The avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SAT 3/3/01 There will be snow on SW winds in the forecast period. The amount expected should not appreciably change stability. The slab identified in the past few days is quite isolated in the Northern Corries and is readily identified on some aspects between 750 to 1000 metres. Most of the gully exits are well scoured. Sluffing of the new snow on steep scoured surfaces may be expected. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). Most of these areas are moderately bonded but some weakly bonded deposits exist on steeper slopes. The avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). Exposed slopes are icy and stable. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SAT 3/3/01 Snow arriving on SW winds will accumulate on N to E aspects. These fresh deposits will be weakly bonded and stability will become poor as depth increases. Some areas of moderately to weakly bonded snow will be found in steeper sheltered locations on SE through to W aspects. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3) and avalanches are likely.
