NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 11/3/01 The past few days have seen a significant warming of the snowpack. The overnight cooling has produced a strong crust above 800 metres. In most places this crust supports a climber but where the crust breaks the foot penetration is about 40 centimetres in moist snow on N aspect. There are some areas with cornices. The snowpack stability is good. There are some areas of thin fragile ice. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 12/3/01 Cool temperatures will maintain the good stability of the deeper snowpack. There will be new snow that will form slab on W and NW aspect above 850 metres. The fragile ice and cornices will still be a hazard in isolated areas. The new slab will be unstable on W and NW aspect above 850 metres. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3).
