NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 12/3/01 There has been continuous snow since Sunday evening. The moderate near Northerly winds have contributed to significant snow transport, drifting and slab build up. There are areas with up to 80 centimetres of foot penetration. The new slab is very unstable and shears easily in field tests. Avalanche activity was noted on East aspect above 1000 metres. The avalanche hazard is High (Category 4) AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 13/3/01 More snow is forecast and moderate winds will continue from the Northerly quarters. This will add to the significant slab load that will continue to be very unstable. Avalanches will occur on numerous aspects in the Northern Corries and other steep terrain above 500 metres. Localised cross loading on approach slopes and gully exits will contribute to widespread areas with poor stability slab. The avalanche hazard will be High (Category 4).
