NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 13/3/01 Only light snow amounts fell in the Northern Corries with some snow transport due to NNW winds. Foot penetrations are still substantial, up to 50 centimetres and although there appears to have been a slow rate of settlement there has been some bonding of the storm snow. The main accumulation on North aspect is reasonably stable. The avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 14/3/01 Light snow and easing NW winds will continue the same loading pattern on scarp slopes and gully exits in the Northern Corries. Slab instability will exist on steep convex terrain above 850 metres, particularly SE aspects (e.g. near the top of Aladdin's Couloir). Cross loading will occur on some approach slopes. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS COMMENT: Foot and Mouth disease precautions. This report applies to the N. Corries only. Please use the N. Corries footpath for access and use the boot disinfectant supplied near the ski area base. Avoid contact with reindeer. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
