NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 6/1/02 It was a mild, dry day with temperature just above freezing at 1200 metres. This has contributed to continued settlement of the snowpack. Mid-pack temperatures in a two and half metres snowpack remain in the -3 degree range. There were no shears evident in the sample area at Coire Raibert. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 7/1/02 Light rain, high freezing level and South-West winds are forecast. The areas of deeper snowpack will remain stable. On all aspects there will be an instability on very steep rock with small patches of thin snow cover. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Category 2). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Access trails of snow turning to ice. ICING: Lots of activity in the Northern Corries, some increase in ice cover with seepage over the colder ground. COMMENT: There are still cold snowpack zones where facets and surface hoar may be observed. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 6/1/02 A thaw is continuing at all levels. Localised surface instabilities are still present, mainly on steep slopes and gullies with a NW through to NE aspect above 900m. Elsewhere the snow pack is wet and generally stable. The avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 7/1/02 Mild conditions and rain at all levels is expected to through out the forecast period. The snowpack will gradually stabilise and consolidate at all levels. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Best cover remaining in high N and E facing corries. ICING: Freezing levels remaining above the summits for the next 24 hours. COMMENT: Limited climbing opportunities. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 6/1/02 Milder conditions with strong South-Westerly winds have reduced the snow cover at lower levels. A light trace of new snow exists above 900m: these accumulations are not significant. The greatest amounts of snow are to be found in the higher corries and in sheltered gullies with a northerly aspect. The snowpack has consolidated and is generally well bonded. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 7/1/02 A mild moist South-West airstream with strong winds will affect the area. With the freezing level well above the summits the snowpack will remain moist but generally well bonded at all levels. On very steep slopes small wet snow sluffs are possible. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1) in sheltered gullies and on steep slopes. Any remaining cornices will be prone to collapse. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow above 850m. General cover remains thin. ICING: Wet ice still remains on paths and rocks above 350m. this will continue to thaw. COMMENT: Rain and mild conditions. SOUTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 6/1/02 All remaining snow is generally well bonded with only a few areas of crusty snow left. Some cool and drier snow is still to be found in deeper areas on S aspects above 1000 metres. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 7/1/02 The freezing level will be well above the summits and there will be some rain. All snow will remain generally well bonded except in some deeper areas of snow on S aspects. Here stability will be marginal particularly on steeper slopes. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Category 2). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Braeriach and Beinn a Bhuird corries holding most snow, Plateau areas are poor. ICING: Most crags still holding ice but smaller watercourses providing better options. COMMENT: Few skiers on S slopes of Beinn a Bhuird today, lower tracks still holding snow. CREAG MEAGAIDH AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 6/1/02 Following yesterday's thaw, the temperature dipped low enough last night for a freeze at all levels. This has caused significant consolidation of the snowpack leaving moderately well bonded hard slab in gullies and sheltered slopes on North-West through North-East to South-East aspects above 850 metres. The avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 7/1/02 It will become milder again, softening the remaining snowpack. Deepest accumulations will remain in gullies and on sheltered slopes on North-West through North-East to South-East aspects above 850 metres. There will be further sluffing from rocks and cornices will become increasingly suspect in the milder air. There are large cornices above Centre Post and the Inner Coire. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Category 2). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Patchy at all levels. Still fairly sparse. ICING: Good on the Post Face and in the Inner Coire. COMMENT: I was going to sharpen my axes but having seen the forecast, I'll no bother! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
