Snow and Avalanche Report Issued at 1500 hrs Thursday 31/10/2002 Exceptional early snowfalls have resulted in substantial accumulations of snow mainly above 600 metres in many highland mountain areas, particularly in the Cairngorms, Creag Meagaidh, Torridon and Perthshire areas. Cornices exist above some slope aspects. A slow thaw has led to a rise in the snow line in most areas, but this has been accompanied by the release of large full-depth slab avalanches on many aspects, some running to low altitude. Several smaller slab releases have been reported in previous days. The avalanche hazard in areas most affected is High (Category 4). Avalanche Hazard Outlook Friday 1/11/2002 Generally warmer and stormier conditions will prevail during this period. Temperatures will rise over Thursday night, with rain forecast by midnight and freezing level above the summits by dawn. This will lead to a period of extreme instability, which may persist as rain becomes heavier on Friday afternoon. Avalanches will occur on all aspects in areas most affected, with long runout likely. Cornices will collapse. Saturday will bring slightly cooler conditions and some stabilisation but stormy and wet conditions on Sunday will again result in instability of the remaining snowpack. In the areas and periods of greatest instability the avalanche hazard will be Very High (Category 5). Regular Reporrts for 5 areas begin 15/12/2002 SAIS Co-ordinator 01479 861264 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
