LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 2/3/04 South West then Southerly winds have caused some redistribution of the snowpack. Localised, shallow deposits of windslab are present on North to East aspects above 1000 metres. These areas are easily avoided. Elsewhere the snowpack is mainly stable. The avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 3/3/04 Overnight snow will gradually be replaced by rain at all levels during Wednesday. Localised instabilities will be present, mainly on steeper North and East aspects above 1000m. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Category 2). Elsewhere the snowpack will be generally stable. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Best cover remaining in high North and East facing corries. ICING: Freezing level rising above the summits during Wednesday. COMMENT: Climbing conditions deteriorating as the thaw arrives. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SOUTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 2/3/04 In steeper sheltered locations on SE to SW aspects above 900 metres highly localised deposits are moderately to weakly bonded where deeper soft accumulations exist. Small slab releases were triggered today at 970 metres on a SE aspect due to the development of faceted crystals at a depth of 25cm. The avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). Elsewhere snow remains generally stable. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 3/3/04 Snowfall will turn to rain as the freezing level rises to 1500 metres during Wednesday potentially destabilising the localised moderately to weakly bonded deposits that will be present in deeper soft accumulations. These will mostly be found in steeper sheltered locations on SE to SW aspects above 900 metres. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). Elsewhere the snow will soften but remain generally stable. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Mostly wind scoured slopes with deeper drifts on SE to SW aspects. ICING: Subject to thaw conditions at all levels. COMMENT: Cornices will be increasingly unstable. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MMENT: Freeze thaw cycle has helped improve overall conditions. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
