NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS FRI 17/12/04 There have been continuous snow showers on very cold strong North-Westerly winds. This has formed localised areas of new windslab mainly on South-East aspects above 900 metres. Old windslab still exists on many North-East aspects. The avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SAT 18/12/04 Very cold strong West to North-West winds with snow showers will continue over the forcast period. Windslab will continue to build on East to South-East aspects above 900 metres. Many scarp slopes and sheltered areas will also be affected. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: A thin covering at all levels with deep accumulations above 900 metres. ICING: Beginning to form in the very cold temperatures. COMMENT: Cold conditions set to continue. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS FRI 17/12/04 Snow showers and strong West to North-West winds have formed localised areas of soft windslab. This slab is present on East and South-East scarp slopes and other sheltered locations above 1000 metres.The avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3).
