LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 19/12/04 W-NW winds are continuing to form unstable snow mainly on scarp slopes and gully exits with a North East, East and South East aspect above 900m. The avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 20/12/04 Snow showers and moderate SW winds will form further areas of unstable snow in sheltered locations. Greatest accumulations will be on gully exits and scarp slopes with a North, North-East and East aspect above 1000m. Avalanches are likely in these locations. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Fresh snow is present above 300m. ICING: No significant build up COMMENT: Still patchy cover in the main corries. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 19/12/04 A clear cold day with no snowfall on the mountains. Light Westerly winds have drifted snow into isolated pockets on North through to Easterly slopes above 900 metres. In these isolated pockets some weaknesses in the surface layers have been observed. The avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2) AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 20/12/04 Westerly winds will bring some snow showers around dawn tomorrow adding to the isolated pockets of snow that exist above 800 metres on North through to Easterly slopes. Weaknesses will remain in the surface layers of the snowpack. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3) CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Loose snow over boulders makes for difficult travel. ICING: Not much riming on the rocks and buttresses. Gullies are looking thin but some buildup is occuring.
