NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 20/12/04 Generally the mountains look bare with a thin layer of snow lying at all levels. Very little snowfall occurred overnight. Moderate winds from the North West during the day has resulted in very isolated pockets of accumulation lying on North to Westerly slopes above 500 metres. The avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 21/12/04 Overnight the wind will be North-Westerly becoming Westerly during the day. Lying snow will continue to drift into sheltered pockets above 400 metres on East to South-East facing slopes. In late afternoon and evening, occasional light snow showers will add to the drifting snow. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Category 2) CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Very thin snow cover apart from sheltered locations in gullies and rib flanks. ICING: Bare buttresses with some icing. The ground is still warm, turf is soft ! COMMENT: Warmer conditions with snow forecast for late tomorrow may improve conditions. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 20/12/04 SW winds are continuing to further load sheltered areas with unstable snow. Main accumulations are on steep North, North- East, East and South-East facing scarp slopes and gully exits above 1000m. The avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 21/12/04 Snow showers will be replaced by rain below 1000m during Tuesday afternoon. Localised areas of unstable snow will persist mainly on steep North, North-East, East and South-East facing scarp slopes and gully exits above 1000m. Avalanches are likely in these locations notably later on Tuesday. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Fresh snow is present above 300m.
