NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS FRI 15/4/05 There have been snow showers on strong North-Easterly winds. The deepest accumulations of new snow lie mainly on Southerly to Westerly aspects above 950 metres. When tested on a South aspect at 1100 metres a weak graupel layer was present beneath surface layers. The avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SAT 16/4/05 Moderate North-Easterly winds will carry light snow overnight turning heavier and more continuous during the day as summit temperatures rise to just above freezing. Weakly bonded windslab will continue to build on sheltered Southerly through West to North-West aspects above 950 metres. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Skiable areas forming on plateau with knee deep drifts in places. ICING: Still a wintry scene on Cairngorm. COMMENT: This is the last report of the season. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS FRI 15/4/05 The North-East winds are continuing to scour many of the higher North, North-East and East aspects. Localised areas of moderately bonded snow are still present in sheltered locations but distribution is fairly variable. The avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SAT 16/4/05 Localised areas of moderately bonded snow will be present mainly on slopes sheltered from the North-East wind. Distribution of this snow will remain variable but generally restricted to above 1000m. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Category 2). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Recent snow still down to around 750m. ICING: Becoming warmer again during Saturday.
