NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE RISK AT 1500 ON TUE 25/1/94 A freeze-thaw has resulted in a very stable snowpack. Avalanche risk Category 2 (Low). Recent heavy snow showers accompanied by strong W winds are increasing the avalanche risk this P.M. on sheltered NE and E facing slopes. AVALANCHE RISK OUTLOOK FOR WED 26/1/94 The strong to gale force W winds are forecast to continue, accompanied by heavy snow showers. This will result in a build up of isolated areas of unstable slab on sheltered NE through to SE facing slopes. The avalanche risk will be Category 3 (Medium Localised). SUMMARY. Isolated pockets of unstable slab on sheltered NE through to SE facing slopes. Avalanche risk Category 3 (Medium Localised). GLENCOE AVALANCHE RISK AT 1500 ON TUE 25/1/94 Fresh accumulations of unstable windslab have formed on many slopes and gullies above 700m, greatest accumulations on slopes and gullies of a N through to E aspect. Avalanche Risk Category 3 (Medium). Unstable cornices forming above N to E slopes. AVALANCHE RISK OUTLOOK FOR WED 26/1/94 Strong Westerly winds gusting up to 70 mph on tops and moderate snowfall overnight will give further deposits of unstable windslab mainly on slopes and gullies of a N through to SE aspect above 700m Avalanches are likely where windslab exists. Avalanche Risk Category 3 (Medium). SUMMARY. Strong winds and moderate snowfall will deposit unstable windslab on N to SE slopes above 700m. Avalanche Risk will remain 3 (Medium). LOCHABER AVALANCHE RISK AT 1500 ON TUE 25/1/94 A thaw overnight has consolidated the existing snowpack. Fresh snowfall this morning has produced areas of windslab, however these are confined to sheltered locations. The avalanche risk is Category 3 (Medium Localised). AVALANCHE RISK OUTLOOK FOR WED 26/1/94 Strong W to NW winds and moderate amounts of snow will load unstable slab on slopes mainly with a E to SE aspect, where avalanches are likely. A increase in temperature later will make wet snow avalanches likely below 1000m. The avalanche risk is expected to be Category 3 (Medium). SUMMARY. Unstable snow forming on most easterly aspects where avalanches are likely. Category 3 (Medium) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
