Avalanche Risk Category 3 (Medium). NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE RISK AT 1500 ON TUE 1/2/94 A generally stable snowpack exists. Moderate snow showers accompanied by strong W winds and a lowering freezing level have deposited pockets of unstable snow on sheltered slopes of an E aspect, giving a Category 3 (Medium Localised) risk of avalanche. AVALANCHE RISK OUTLOOK FOR WED 2/2/94 Forecasted moderate to strong SW wind accompanied by light snow showers and a drop in freezing level will result in increased deposits of unstable snow particulary on sheltered N to E facing slopes. The avalanche risk will remain Category 3 (Medium Localised). SUMMARY. Light snow showers accompanied by strong SW winds and light snow showers will deposit unstable snow on N to E slopes. Category 3 (Medium Localised) risk of avalanche. LOCHABER AVALANCHE RISK AT 1500 ON TUE 1/2/94 Wet and generally stable snow exists below 1100m. Above this altitude, areas of unstable windslab exist mainly on E aspects. Where this windslab exists the avalanche risk is Category 3 (Medium). AVALANCHE RISK OUTLOOK FOR WED 2/2/94 Heavy snow above 300m overnight and tomorrow will load slopes with unstable windslab. Greatest accumulations will be on N and E aspects where avalanches will occur. The avalanche risk will rise to Category 4 (High). SUMMARY.
