NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE RISK AT 1500 ON SAT 5/2/94 Storm force winds and drifting snow have maintained the current Category 4 (High) risk of avalanche, primarily on N facing slopes and gullies and on high sheltered lee slopes. AVALANCHE RISK OUTLOOK FOR SUN 6/2/94 Continuing strong winds and further snow showers will maintain a Category 4 (High) risk of avalanche, with windslab developing primarily on N facing slopes and gullies and on high sheltered lee slopes, where avalanches will occur. SUMMARY. Strong winds and snow showers will maintain a category 4 (High) risk of avalanche, mainly on N facing slopes. GLENCOE AVALANCHE RISK AT 1500 ON SAT 5/2/94. The old snow pack has consolidated and has formed an icy surface layer, on which fresh new snow is lying. Deepest accumulations are to be found on most slopes above 750m, but especially in gullies and sheltered hollows with a N aspect. Large cornices have formed above most N facing corries. Avalanche Risk Category 3 (Medium). AVALANCHE RISK OUTLOOK FOR SUN 6/2/94. New snow with strong SSE winds will continue to deposit fresh snow above 700m. Accumulations of fresh snow will be unstable with greatest deposits lying on slopes with a N aspect, but mainly in sheltered areas and in gullies. Avalanche Risk Category 3 (Medium). SUMMARY. Fresh accumulations of snow lying on an icy base, mainly on N facing slopes. Avalanche Risk Category 3 (Medium). LOCHABER AVALANCHE RISK AT 1500 ON SAT 5/2/94 A generally stable snowpack exists on most slope aspects. In sheltered areas (mainly northerly aspects) some unconsolidated snow exists. At these locations, the avalanche risk is Category 3 (Medium). AVALANCHE RISK OUTLOOK FOR SUN 6/2/94 Continuing light snow and strong southerly winds will further load northerly aspects with unstable windslab. Where this fresh slab exists, the avalanche risk is expected to be Category 3 (Medium). SUMMARY. Fresh windslab continuing to form on northerly aspects. Category 3 (Medium). ADDENDUM EASTER ROSS Large unstable cornices have formed above NE and E facing slopes in this area. Large cornice-triggered airborne-powder avalanche noted on E facing slope on Ben Wyvis. This hazard will persist while conditions remain cold. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
