GLENCOE
AVALANCHE RISK AT 1500 ON WED 9/2/94.
Below 900m the old snow pack has become very moist: above 900m new
snow is lying on slopes of all aspects. Greatest accumulations are in
gullies and sheltered slopes. Windslab has formed on slopes mainly
with a NW through to E aspect.Large cornices have formed above most N
facing corries. Avalanche Risk Category 4 (High). Avalanche debris
observed Coirie nam Beith.
                           
AVALANCHE RISK OUTLOOK FOR THU 10/2/94.
A cold dry NW airstream will consolidate much of the snowpack.
However unstable windslab in gullies and sheltered slopes mainly
above 900m. will remain. Greatest accumulations of unstable snow are
to be expected on slopes and gullies with a NW through to E aspect.
Avalanche Risk Category 3 (Medium). Avalanches are likely where
windslab exists.


SUMMARY.
Avalanche Risk will become 3 (Medium) as colder weather consolidates
much of snowpack. Unstable areas of windslab will remain.


NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS
AVALANCHE RISK AT 1500 ON WEDS 9/2/94
W, later NW, winds in combination with snow showers have deposited
accumulations of unstable windslab high on E to SE facing slopes and
gullies. Small pockets of marginally stable windslab are present in
sheltered areas of some NE facing gullies. Category 4 (High) risk of
avalanche.

AVALANCHE RISK OUTLOOK FOR THU 10/2/94
Light overnight snow showers and winds strong NW, then light N, will
continue to load unstable windslab onto SE facing slopes and gullies
where avalanches will occur. The stability of pre-existing pockets of
windslab high on E and NE facing gullies are not expected to see much
improvement over the period. Category 4 (High) risk of avalanche.

SUMMARY.
Category 4 (High) risk of avalanche mainly on N, E and SE facing slopes
and gullies where avalanches will occur.


LOCHABER
AVALANCHE RISK AT 1500 ON WED 9/2/94
Overnight snowfall and WSW winds have deposited fresh snow on most
slope aspects. A rapid thaw this morning has produced a moist,
unstable snowpack at most levels. The avalanche risk is Category 4
(High).

AVALANCHE RISK OUTLOOK FOR THU 10/2/94
A ridge of high pressure will bring cold conditions overnight. Colder
temperatures with a freezing level of 600m will consolidate the
existing snowpack. The avalanche risk is expected to be Category 2
(Low).

SUMMARY.
Snowpack stabilising with cold temperatures overnight and on
Thursday. Avalanche risk Category 2 (Low).
