NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS
AVALANCHE RISK AT 1500 ON TUE 15/2/94
Extensive areas of unstable windslab have been deposited high on W to
NW facing slopes and gullies by strong E to SE winds and recent heavy
snow showers. Category 4 (High) risk of avalanche. Cairngorm ski area
closed due to blizzard conditions Tuesday lunchtime.

AVALANCHE RISK OUTLOOK FOR WED 16/2/94
Little change is expected in current wintry conditions until daylight
hours on Weds when snow showers should ease and winds moderate and
become SW. The current high avalanche hazard will be maintained
throughout the period on NW to NE facing slopes and gullies where
avalanches will occur. Category 4 (High) risk of avalanche.

stable neve base in gullies and sheltered slopes above 600m. greatest
accumulations are to be found in those with w through to ne aspect.
avalanche risk category 4 (high) where windslab exists. cornices are
forming above northerly slopes.

avalanche risk outlook for wed 16/2/94
remaining cold with severe gale southerly winds and moderate/high
snowfall overnight. windslab will form on all sheltered slopes above
600m with greatest deposits likely in gullies and slopes with a w
through to ne aspect. avalanche risk category will remain 4 (high)
avalanches will occur where windslab exists.

Gale force SE winds and fresh snow, have loaded northerly aspects and
other sheltered locations with unstable windslab. The avalanche risk
is Category 3 (Medium)

AVALANCHE RISK OUTLOOK FOR WED 16/2/94
An approaching cold front will bring snow overnight, strong SE
winds will futher load northerly aspects with unstable windslab,
greatest accumulations will be on NW and N aspects, where avalanches
are likely. The avalanche risk is expected to be Category 3 (Medium).

SUMMARY.
Strong SE winds and heavy snow will load NW and N facing slopes with
unstable slab, where avalanches are likely. Category 3 (Medium).
