GLENCOE AVALANCHE RISK AT 1500 ON FRI 25/2/94 Generally there is a stable surface crust on the snowpack. Above 850m areas of windslab exist, mainly on SW through to N facing slopes. Avalanche Risk Category 3 (Medium Localised). AVALANCHE RISK OUTLOOK FOR SAT 26/2/94 Snowfall overnight and into Sat. and gale force E winds will deposit windslab on SW through to N facing slopes, particularly in gullies and hollows above 850m. Avalanches are likely in these areas. Avalanche Risk Category 3 (Medium). SUMMARY Increasing avalanche risk on SW through to N facing slopes above 850m where avalanches are likely. Avalanche Risk Category 3 (Medium). LOCHABER AVALANCHE RISK AT 1500 ON FRI 25/2/94 There has been little change to the generally stable snowpack. Small areas of unstable slab exist mainly on westerly aspects. The avalanche risk is Category 3 (Medium Localised). AVALANCHE RISK OUTLOOK FOR SAT 26/2/94 Blizzard conditions overnight will further load westerly facing slopes with unstable snow, including the Red Burn area on Ben Nevis. Avalanches will occur on all westerly aspects. Unstable cornices will form on lee slopes. The avalanche risk is expected to increase to Category 4 (High). SUMMARY. Blizzard conditions will load W aspects with unstable snow, where avalanches will occur. Unstable cornices forming. Category 4 (High). NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE RISK AT 1500 ON FRI 25/2/94 Patches of marginally stable windslab exist high in some sheltered gully areas of a N aspect. Many other areas in the N.Corries have been scoured, although expanses of old, deeper, moderately stabilised windslab were noted on some NW facing slopes. Category 3 (Medium) risk of avalanche. Cornices continue to develop on rim of N.Corries. AVALANCHE RISK OUTLOOK FOR SAT 26/2/94 Forecasted heavy snowfall throughout the period and moderate to strong SE winds will lead to the build up of patches of unstable windslab in sheltered areas of N to NW facing slopes and gullies where avalanches will occur. Category 4 (High Localised) risk of avalanche where accumulations of new windslab are greatest. SUMMARY. Heavy snow and SE winds will give a Category 4 (High Localised) risk of avalanche in N to NW slopes where avalanches will occur. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
