A heavy thaw and rain has saturated the snowpack at all levels. All
slopes and cornices have become very unstable. Avalanche activity due
to thaw observed on various slopes throughout the glen. Avalanche
Risk Category 4 (High).

AVALANCHE RISK OUTLOOK FOR SAT 5/3/94.
Overnight new moist snow with strong WNW winds will deposit fresh
snow on N through to E facing slopes above 500m. Lower temperatures
above 700m will start to refreeze the saturated snowpack on all
aspects. Avalanches are still likely where fresh deposits of snow
exist. Avalanche Risk Category 3 (Medium).

SUMMARY
Heavy thaw at all levels on Friday conditions for Saturday improving
but avalanches are still likely. Avalanche Risk Category 3 (Medium).


LOCHABER
AVALANCHE RISK AT 1500 ON FRI 4/3/94
A thaw during the day has produced a moist and unstable snowpack at
all levels. The avalanche risk is Category 4 (High).

AVALANCHE RISK OUTLOOK FOR SAT 5/3/94
Colder conditions overnight will consolidate the existing snowpack.
Fresh snow and strong WNW winds will form unstable windslab on
most easterly aspects and other sheltered locations, where avalanches
are likely. The avalanche risk is expected to be Category 3 (Medium).


SUMMARY.
Unstable windslab forming on easterly aspects, where avalanches are
likely. Category 3 (Medium).


NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS
AVALANCHE RISK AT 1500 ON FRI 4/3/94
Rain showers and a rapid rise in temperature have seriously weakened
the snowpack on slopes of all aspects but in particular in areas of
old and recent windslab. Stability of most cornices remains very
poor. Loose snow avalanche debris noted on steep N facing slopes in
Coire Laogh Mor. Category 4 (High) risk of avalanche.

AVALANCHE RISK OUTLOOK FOR SAT 5/3/94
Freezing level will rise to 2000m before a strong,
colder and showery W airstream brings moderate snow showers
starting in the early hours of Sat.. Colder temperatures will help
consolidate the snowpack in places later in the day, but
accumulations of poorly stabilised windslab can be expected on any
high, steep, sheltered areas of mainly E to SE facing slopes and
gullies where avalanches will occur. Category 4 (High Localised) risk
of avalanche.
