GLENCOE AVALANCHE RISK AT 1500 ON SAT 5/3/94 There are areas of unstable new snow lying on an icy crust on sheltered slopes and gullies above 500m. Greatest accumulations are to be found on slopes with a N through to E aspect. Avalanche Risk Category 3 (Medium). Avalanche debris observed on Meall a Bhuiridh. AVALANCHE RISK OUTLOOK FOR SUN 6/3/94 Moderate snowfall overnight and Westerly winds will deposit fresh snow mainly on easterly slopes above 500m. Heavy rain at all levels during course of day will moisten the snowpack increasing the Avalanche Risk Category to 4 (High). Avalanches will occur on most slope aspects and cornices will become unstable. SUMMARY. Heavy rain at all levels during Sunday will increase the Avalanche Risk to 4 (High). Avalanches will occur on most slope aspects. LOCHABER AVALANCHE RISK AT 1500 ON SAT 5/3/94 Large areas of unstable snow are present on easterly aspects, and other sheltered locations. The avalanche risk is Category 4 (High). AVALANCHE RISK OUTLOOK FOR SUN 6/3/94 Overnight snow and W winds will further load unstable snow on to easterly aspects, where avalanches will occur. Warm conditions and rain by midday at all levels will cause wet snow avalanches and cornice collapse in the afternoon. The avalanche risk is expected to remain Category 4 (High). SUMMARY. Avalanches will occur on all easterly aspects, with thaw conditions causing wet snow avalanches and cornice collapse. Category 4 (High). NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE RISK AT 1500 ON SAT 5/3/94 Snow showers and strong SW to WNW winds have led to the rapid build up of new, very weakly stabilised windslab on steep NE to SE facing slopes and gullies. Category 4 (High) avalanche risk where recent accumulations are greatest. Dry slab avalanches triggered on a NE facing slope in Coire Laogh Mor and high on E flank of Cairngorm. AVALANCHE RISK OUTLOOK FOR SUN 6/3/94 The strong, cold W to WSW airflow will continue, with snow showers until later in the period when these will turn to moderate rain as the freezing level rises to 1300m. Current high avalanche hazard on NE to SE facing slopes and gullies - where avalanches will occur - will persist until the gradual rise in freezing level commences. New windslab forming on NE to SE facing slopes and gullies will continue to show very poor stability. Category 4 (High) risk of avalanche, declining somewhat later. SUMMARY. Category 4 (High) avalanche risk on NE to SE facing slopes where avalanches will occur. Risk declining later in day. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
