GLENCOE AVALANCHE RISK AT 1500 ON WED 16/3/94 The old snow has stabilised and has a refrozen crust above 600m. New snow has formed areas of unstable windslab mainly on NE through to SE slopes and in sheltered gullies and hollows above 800m. Avalanche Risk Category 4 (High) where windslab has formed. AVALANCHE RISK OUTLOOK FOR THU 17/3/94 Moderate/heavy snowfall with strong/gale force NW winds will give further accumulations of unstable new snow mainly on NE through to SE slopes and in all sheltered gullies and hollows above 600m. Avalanche Risk Category 4 (High). Avalanches will occur in areas of greatest accumulation. SUMMARY. Avalanches will occur where windslab has formed mainly on NE to SE slopes and sheltered gullies above 600m. Avalanche Risk 4 (High). LOCHABER AVALANCHE RISK AT 1500 ON WED 16/3/94 Large areas of very unstable snow exist, mainly on north and east facing slopes. Avalanche debris observed in Coire na Ciste, Ben Nevis. The avalanche risk is Category 5 (Very High). AVALANCHE RISK OUTLOOK FOR THU 17/3/94 Further accumulations of snow overnight and strong NW winds will continue to load existing unstable snow. On N and E aspects, the snowpack will remain in a very unstable condition. Avalanches will occur in these areas. Cornices will be prone to collapse. The avalanche risk will remain at Category 5 (Very High). SUMMARY. Large areas of very unstable snow exist on N and E aspects, where avalanches will occur. Risk remaining at Category 5 (Very High). NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE RISK AT 1500 ON WED 16/3/94 W to NW winds and snow showers have created accumulations of very poorly stabilised windslab on NE to SE facing slopes and gullies. Two small skier-triggered avalanches at 900m on ENE facing slope. Category 4 (High) risk of avalanche. AVALANCHE RISK OUTLOOK FOR THU 17/3/94 Wintry conditions are forecast to continue with moderate to heavy snow showers and strong NW winds. This will allow further accumulations of very poorly stabilised windslab to develop on slopes and gullies of a NE to SE aspect where avalanches will occur. Category 4 (High) risk of avalanche in these areas. SUMMARY. Category 4 (High) risk of avalanche on NE to SE facing slopes and gullies where avalanches will occur. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
