NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE RISK AT 1500 ON SUN 27/3/94 Recent sleety snow showers with very strong S winds have resulted in accumulations of marginally stable windslab on most steep N facing aspects giving a Category 3 (Medium) risk of avalanche in those areas. AVALANCHE RISK OUTLOOK FOR MON 28/3/94 Forecasted heavy rain and a sharp but brief rise in freezing level to 1500m is expected to result in a poorly stabilised snowpack until the freezing level drops to around summits and rain turns to moderate sleety snow. Any subsequent significant new windslab accumulations on steep N to NE aspects may also show weak stability even at lower altitudes. Category 3 (Medium) risk of avalanche on N to NE facing slopes where avalanches are likely. SUMMARY. Category 3 (Medium) risk of avalanche on N to NE facing slopes and gullies where avalanches are likely. GLENCOE AVALANCHE RISK AT 1500 ON SUN 27/3/94 Above 750m much of the snowpack has a stable refrozen crust however there are areas of unstable new snow mainly on NW through to E facing slopes and in all sheltered gullies and hollows. Avalanche Risk Category 3 (Medium). AVALANCHE RISK OUTLOOK FOR MON 28/3/94 Strong SW winds and heavy rain at all levels overnight and during course of day will thoroughly moisten the snowpack. Wet snow avalanches will occur where deposits are greatest on slopes of all aspects. Avalanche Risk Category 4 (High). SUMMARY. Wet snow avalanches will occur on slopes of all aspects during period of heavy thaw increasing Avalanche Risk Category to 4 (High). LOCHABER AVALANCHE RISK AT 1500 ON SUN 27/3/94 Small areas of fresh unstable snow exist in an otherwise stable snowpack. These areas are confined to northerly aspects above 950m. The avalanche risk is Category 3 (Medium Localised). AVALANCHE RISK OUTLOOK FOR MON 28/3/94 A thaw at most levels overnight and tomorrow will produce a generally stable snowpack. However, above 1100m some fresh unstable snow will form on NE aspects. Cornices will be prone to collapse. Where this fresh snow exists, the avalanche risk will be Category 3 (Medium). SUMMARY. Above 1100m some fresh unstable snow will form on NE aspects.Category 3 (Medium) where this fresh snow exists. Elsewhere generally stable. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
