NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE RISK AT 1500 ON TUE 29/3/94 A thaw and re-freeze of existing snow has led to a hard, icy and stable snowpack. However strong W winds are drifting new snow onto steep, sheltered slopes of an E aspect. These pockets of slab show signs of instability but are small and generally easily avoided. Category 3 (Medium Localised) risk of avalanche in these areas where any accumulations are greatest. AVALANCHE RISK OUTLOOK FOR WED 30/3/94 Severe gale force SW winds will bring snow, turning to rain as the freezing level rises from 600m to 1400m by the end of the period. Accumulations of slab on N through to E facing slopes and gullies will become wet in thaw conditions, resulting in a Category 3 (Medium Localised) risk of slab or loose snow avalanche in these areas. SUMMARY. Category 3 (Medium Localised) risk of avalanche on N through to E facing slopes and gullies. LOCHABER AVALANCHE RISK AT 1500 ON TUE 29/3/94 Overnight snow and strong westerly winds have deposited fresh unstable snow on most easterly aspects. Greatest accumulations are on slopes above 1000m. Cornices are unstable. The avalanche risk is Category 3 (Medium). AVALANCHE RISK OUTLOOK FOR WED 30/3/94 Fresh snow overnight followed by a thaw tomorrow will produce an unstable snowpack. Dry snow avalanches are likely early in the day and wet snow avalanches will occur as the freezing level rises. This avalanche activity will be confined to N and E aspects. Cornices will remain unstable. As the day progresses, the avalanche risk will increase to Category 4 (High). SUMMARY. Unstable snowpack. Wet snow avalanches will occur later in the day. Cornices will remain unstable. Avalanche risk Category 4 (High). GLENCOE AVALANCHE RISK AT 1500 ON TUE 29/3/94 There is a widespread refrozen crust on the surface of the snowpack. Fresh snow has formed soft windslab which is lying mainly on N through to SE facing slopes above 800m, accumulations greatest in gullies and hollows. Avalanche Risk Category 3 (Medium Localised). AVALANCHE RISK OUTLOOK FOR WED 30/3/94 After further light snowfall the temperature will rise above the summits. Wet slab avalanches are likely where there are areas of windslab on N through to SE facing slopes above 800m as the thaw sets in. Avalanche Risk Category 3 (Medium Localised). SUMMARY Wet slab avalanches are likely on N through to SE facing slopes above 800m due to thaw conditions. Avalanche Risk 3 (Medium Localised). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
