NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS FRI 22/12/95 Unstable windslab has developed primarily on NW facing slopes. This has resulted in a Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche. Slab avalanche triggered on Coire Cas headwall. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SAT 23/12/95 Wintry conditions continuing with further snow and winds moderate SE becoming NE through the period. This will deposit windslab primarily on NW through to SW facing slopes and gullies maintaining the current Considerable (Category 3) hazard. Where these accumulations over-lie weaknesses already in the snowpack, avalanches are likely. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Covering of new snow at all levels. COMMENT: Thin conditions in both gullies and on buttresses. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS FRI 22/12/95 A small amount of overnight snow accompanied by strong S winds has deposited small localised areas of unstable windslab on W, NW and N facing slopes. Where this fresh snow exists the avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SAT 23/12/95 Overnight snow accompanied by strong E winds will cause further accumulations of snow mainly on S, SW and W facing slopes, above 600m. Where these fresh deposits exist the avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: A thin dusting of snow exists in the Ben Nevis area. ICING: Widespread icing on all slopes. COMMENT: Thin conditions on some ice routes. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS FRI 22/12/95 Snow showers overnight have deposited pockets of shallow soft slab in sheltered hollows and gullies above 700m. Slopes with a S to W aspect are most affected. Avalanche hazard Moderate (Category 2). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SAT 23/12/95 Heavy snowfall and strong NE winds will deposit layers of windslab mainly on slopes facing S to W above 800m.In sheltered hollows and gullies there will be a Considerable avalanche hazard (Category 3 Localised). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Light covering above 400m. ICING: Ice on rock and paths above 400m. COMMENT: Icy paths and frozen turf still require caution. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
