NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 23/12/95 Some consolidation of recent isolated pockets of windslab on N to NW facing slopes has taken place. A Moderate (Category 2) hazard of avalanche exists in these areas. Some unstable cornices on slopes of a similar aspect. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 24/12/95 Snow showers accompanied by fresh NW winds during the day. This will lead to little change in the current Moderate (Category 2) avalanche hazard on SE facing slopes and also on NW aspects where pockets of marginally stable windslab prevail. SUMMARY. (Category 2) Moderate hazard of avalanche on SE and NW facing slopes and gullies. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Thin snow cover at all levels. ICING: * COMMENT: Poor conditions in gullies. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 23/12/95 There is a sparse snow cover in the area, with little risk of any avalanche activity. There are small localised deposits in some sheltered hollows which may require some caution. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 24/12/95 Any snow which falls in the next 24 hour period is not likely to have any effect on the existing avalanche hazard. There is a sparse snow cover in the area. The avalanche hazard will remain Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: A light dusting of snow exists above 700m. ICING: Large areas of ice are present on many paths. COMMENT: A few ice routes are complete on Ben Nevis. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 23/12/95 Snow showers overnight have deposited pockets of dry windslab.Summit gullies and sheltered hollows on SW to NW slopes contain Localised areas of unstable windslab.In these areas the Avalanche Hazard is Considerable (Cat 3). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 24/12/95 Light snow showers from the NE will deposit further layers to existing windslab.Sheltered hollows on SW to NW slopes above 700m and summit gullies will hold growing areas of unstable dry windslab.Also where windslab overlies steep frozen grass the Avalanche Hazard will be Considerable (Cat 3 Localised). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow above 400m. ICING: Ice above 400m.
