------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 24/12/95 Fresh unconsolidated snow exists over most of the area. This fresh snow is generally stable. However, in sheltered locations there are some significant accumulations which have formed as soft windslab. Where these deposits exist, the avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2 Localised). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 25/12/95 Strong northerly winds and further snow is expected overnight and tomorrow. This will redistribute the existing snow and form new areas of unstable snow mainly on SE, S and SW aspects. Any avalanche hazard will be localised to these new deposits. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3 Localised). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Unconsolidated snow at all levels. ICING: Large areas of icing still exist under the new snow. COMMENT: The unconsolidated snow has created difficult underfoot conditions. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 23/12/95 Some consolidation of recent isolated pockets of windslab on N to NW facing slopes has taken place. A Moderate (Category 2) hazard of avalanche exists in these areas. Some unstable cornices on slopes of a similar aspect. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 24/12/95 Snow showers accompanied by fresh NW winds during the day. This will lead to little change in the current Moderate (Category 2) avalanche hazard on SE facing slopes and also on NW aspects where pockets of marginally stable windslab prevail. SUMMARY. (Category 2) Moderate hazard of avalanche on SE and NW facing slopes and gullies. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Thin cover of snow at all levels. COMMENT: Poor conditions in gully climbs. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 23/12/95 Some consolidation of recent isolated pockets of windslab on N to NW facing slopes has taken place. Several slab avalanches released on SE facing slopes above Loch Avon. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 25/12/95 Very strong N winds and snow will lead to further accumulations of unstable slab on SE through to SW facing slopes where avalanches will occur. (Category 4) High hazard of avalanche in these areas. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Thin cover of snow at all levels. ICING: Generally poor. COMMENT: Poor mountain conditions expected on Monday. Merry Christmas....ho,ho,ho. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
