LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 25/12/95 Overnight winds have redistributed yesterdays fresh snow. Most N and E aspects have been eroded and fresh slab has formed on S, SW and W aspects. There are some instabilities within these fresh deposits, but these are generally confined to localised areas were the deposits are of a significant depth. The avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3 Localised) in these locations. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 26/12/95 Further snow showers accompanied by NW winds are expected overnight and tomorrow. N, NE and E aspects will stay generally free from any significant snow accumulations. SE, S and SW aspects will continue to have localised areas of unstable snow, mainly below ridge lines and in other sheltered locations. Where these deposits exist, the avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3 Localised). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Unconsolidated snow at all levels. ICING: Large areas of icing are still present under the new snow. COMMENT: The unconsolidated snow has created difficult underfoot conditions. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 25/12/95 Fresh snowfall and strong overnight winds have resulted in deposits of marginally stable windslab, primarily on slopes with a S aspect. In these steeper locations a High (Localised Category 4) avalanche hazard exists. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 26/12/95 Moderate N winds with more snow will maintain the current High (Category 4) avalanche hazard primarily on S to SE facing slopes and gullies where avalanches will occur. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow at all levels ICING: Generally poor COMMENT: Fresh snow with deep drifts in places -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
