NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS WED 27/12/95 Recent windslab build up on S facing slopes continues to consolidate. The avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK THU 28/12/95 Dry, calm and cold conditions are expected to continue resulting in little change to the current Moderate (Category 2) hazard of avalanche on steep S facing slopes. Persistent cold temperatures will maintain the near surface instabilities already present in the snowpack. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Good cover of snow on the plateau. ICING: Deceptively poor. COMMENT: LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS WED 27/12/95 There has been little change to the present snow accumulations. Small areas of windslab are present on W, SW and S facing aspects and where this slab exists the avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2 Localised). Elsewhere shallow unconsolidated snow exists at all levels. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK THU 28/12/95 Light snow and variable winds overnight, will have little effect on the snowpack. Localised areas of windslab will be present on W, SW and S aspects, especially at the tops of gullies. Where this slab exists the hazard will remain Moderate (Category 2 Localised). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Extensive snow cover at all levels, this snow is shallow and unconsolidated. ICING: Large areas of icing exist under the new snow. COMMENT: Some climbs in condition, although thin. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS WED 27/12/95 Northerly winds have redistributed much of the snow cover to southerly slopes and lower altitudes. Where new snow over-lies windslab in summit gullies and sheltered hollows above 750m there is a Moderate (Category 2 Localised) avalanche hazard. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK THU 28/12/95 Continuing very cold temperatures will bring little change to the snowpack. Above 750m layers of shallow unstable snow will still exist mainly in summit gullies and sheltered areas on S through to W facing slopes. These areas are very localised and large natural avalanches are not likely. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Category 2 Localised). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow at all levels. Southerly slopes have deep drifted snow at lower levels. ICING: Ice has formed at all levels. COMMENT: Verglas exists on most paths. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
