NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS THU 28/12/95 Despite the continuing cold conditions further consolidation has taken place. Isolated pockets of near surface instability do still persist but in the main, the snowpack is stable. Avalanche hazard Low (Category 1) AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK FRI 29/12/95 Continuing cold with winds increasing slightly. The current Low (Category 1) avalanche hazard will remain. Any increased hazard from possible re-distributed windblown snow on N slopes is not expected until later in the period. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Good general cover ICING: Conditions in gullies and on buttresses remain lean, with little significant build-up. COMMENT: Difficult approach walking conditions, with deep drifts in places. Fine ski-touring despite areas of breakable crust. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS THU 28/12/95 There has been little change to the present snow accumulations. Small areas of windslab are present on W, SW and S facing aspects and where this slab exists the avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2 Localised). Elsewhere shallow unconsolidated snow exists at all levels. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK FRI 29/12/95 Continuing cold and clear conditions are expected overnight and tomorrow. This will have little effect on the existing avalanche hazard. Localised areas of slab will be present in sheltered locations, mainly on S, SW and W aspects, where the avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Category 2 Localised). Elsewhere the snowpack is not of sufficient depth to form any avalanche hazard. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Unconsolidated snow at all levels. ICING: Large areas of icing exist under the soft snow. COMMENT: Some climbs in condition, although thin. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS THU 28/12/95 There are isolated areas of shallow unstable snow in summit gullies and sheltered hollows above 750m The avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2) in these areas. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK FRI 29/12/95 Strong SE winds will redistribute existing snow and will form windslab mainly on slopes with a W through to N aspect and in sheltered summit gullies above 750m. These areas will be very localised but where deeper accumulations form the avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3) Localised CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow at all levels ICING: Ice at all levels COMMENT: Verglas on many paths. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
