NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS FRI 29/12/95 The snowpack is generally stable. Avalanche hazard Low (Category 1) AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SAT 30/12/95 An expected change will bring some snow with winds becoming strong SE by midday. This will result in an increasing avalanche hazard with windslab expected to develop primarily on NW facing slopes and gullies. The avalanche hazard will become Considerable (Category 3) in these areas. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow cover widespread ICING: Lean conditions in both gullies and on buttresses COMMENT: With winds increasing throughout the day an early departure off the hill would be prudent. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS FRI 29/12/95 Clear weather conditions last night and today have once again had little effect on the avalanche hazard. SE winds have loaded small areas of windslab mainly on SW, W and NW facing aspects, where this slab exists the avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2 Localised). Elsewhere shallow unconsolidated snow exists at all levels. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SAT 30/12/95 A strengthening SE airstream will have little effect on the existing avalanche hazard. Localised areas of slab will be present in sheltered locations, mainly on SW, W and NW aspects, where the avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Category 2 Localised). Elsewhere the snowpack is not of sufficient depth to form any avalanche hazard. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Soft snow at all levels, making underfoot conditions difficult at times. ICING: Large areas of ice are present on many slopes, at times covered by the soft snow. COMMENT: In the Ben Nevis area there are only a few ice routes in condition. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS FRI 29/12/95 Isolated areas of windslab are present mainly in summit gullies and slopes with a westerly aspect above 800m. In these areas the avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2 Localised) AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SAT 30/12/95 Some redistribution of snow will occur in strong SE winds, but this will give no significant change to avalanche hazard which will remain Moderate (Category 2 Localised) where windslab has formed in summit gullies and slopes with a westerly aspect above 800m CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow at all levels ICING: Ice at all levels COMMENT: Many paths still icy. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
