NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 30/12/95 Snow showers on strong SE winds have created areas of marginally stabilised windslab high on many steep NW to NE facing slopes and gullies. A Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche exists in these areas. The lower sections of many popular climbs in the Northern Corries have been scoured by strong counter winds. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 31/12/95 A period of snow showers during Hogmanay and strong SE winds winds will result in the continued development of marginally to poorly stabilised windslab on NW to NE-facing slopes and gullies where avalanches are likely. The avalanche hazard will remain Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: The snow cover remains widespread with heavy drifting in places. ICING: Climbing conditions are generally poor. Most gullies are devoid of neve and can be quite 'technical' in the upper reaches. Ice build up remains thin but good frozen turf reported on some buttress routes. COMMENT: Poor mountain conditions likely during Hogmanay. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 30/12/95 There continues to be a localised hazard, in sheltered locations with a SW, W and NW slope orientation. The gusty SE wind has been transporting loose snow, although this is being dispersed rather than deposited as windslab. The avalanche hazard remains Moderate (Category 2 Localised). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 31/12/95 Light snowfall is expected overnight accompanied by storm force SE winds. This will have little effect on the present hazard. There will continue to be a localised hazard of windslab in sheltered locations and gullies with a SW through NW slope orientation. Where this windslab exists the avalanche hazard will remain Moderate (Category 2 Localised). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow remaining at all levels. ICING: Extensive ice on many slopes and paths. COMMENT: Crampons and ice axes essential for all hill walkers. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 30/12/95 Isolated areas of windslab are present mainly in summit gullies and slopes with a westerly aspect above 800m. In these areas the avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2 Localised) AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 31/12/95 New snow and a strong SE airflow will continue to deposit windslab mainly in summit gullies and slopes with a westerly aspect. These accumulations are not expected to begreat and will give no significant change to avalanche hazard which will remain Moderate (Category 2 Localised) where windslab has formed. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow at all levels ICING: Ice at all levels COMMENT: Severe gale winds on summits. Ice on many paths -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
