NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 2/1/96 Milder conditions have brought about some marginal consolidation to the snowpack in many locations. However, persistent sub-surface instabilities were again noted on some N facing slopes and gullies giving rise to a Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche in those areas. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 3/1/96 Continued mild conditions during Wednesday will bring little change to the present Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche on both N and S aspects. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION:Thawing conditions have resulted in a patchy snow cover below 750m. ICING:Ice conditions affected by thaw . COMMENT: Poor mountain conditions in view during Wednesday. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 2/1/96 There is still a limited snow cover in the area. The most significant deposits are in hollows and other sheltered locations, mainly on NW, N and NE aspects above 900m. Where this snow exists the avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2 Localised). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 3/1/96 Milder conditions are expected tomorrow. The snowpack will become moist and thaw at all levels. Some wet snow instability is expected, although this will be restricted to where the existing deposits are of a significant depth. As the day progresses the existing snow will begin to stabilise. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Category 2 Localised). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Existing snow will thaw at all levels on Wednesday. ICING: Areas of icing will still be present on paths. COMMENT: Gale force winds expected on Wednesday. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 2/1/96 New wet snow exists above 750m with the greatest accumulations on NWthrough to NE facing slopes. Isolated areas of dense windslab still exist on W to NE slopes but mainly in sheltered gullies above 800m. Where the localised accumulations of windslab are deepest there is a Considerable (Category 3 Localised) avalanche hazard. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 3/1/96 The milder SW airstream and S to SW winds will continue to affect the area. Above 850m windslab will continue to form on NW to NE facing slopes before rain affects all levels. Where layers of windslab exist on steeper W to NE slopes the avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3 Localised). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: New snow above 800m at first but heavy thaw will bring rain to all levels. ICING: No new ice will form. COMMENT: Poor mountain conditions on Wednesday. Small wet snow slides possible on steep slopes. Remaining snow will start to consolidate, albeit very wet. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
