AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK FRI 5/1/96 Little change in weather and snowpack conditions expected over the period which will maintain a Low (Category 1) hazard of avalanche. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Remains patchy below 850m. ICING: Freeze/thaw above 900m helping to improve ice and neve build up. COMMENT: Pretty average January conditions....... LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS THU 4/1/96 A dusting of snow exists above 800m. This fresh snow has formed areas of fresh windslab at the tops of NW, N and NE facing slopes and gullies. Where this fresh wind slab exists the avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2 Localised). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK FRI 5/1/96 A forecast of warm wet conditions at all levels will cause the snowpack to thaw. This may produce localised wet snow avalanches on slopes above 900m with a NW, N and NE slope orientation. By midday on Friday cooler weather will begin to stabilise the remaining snowpack. The avalanche hazard will remain Moderate (Category 2 Localised). Any unforecasted fluctuations in the overnight freezing level, causing fresh snow, will increase the existing avalanche hazard. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Main accumulations at the tops of gullies and other sheltered locations. ICING: Icy patches remaining on paths. COMMENT: A return to colder conditions on Friday afternoon. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS THU 4/1/96 The snowpack above 750m is generally well stabilised.Where shallow deposits of new wet snow lie in steeper summit gullies facing NE to NW the avalanche hazard is Moderate. (Category 2 Localised). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK FRI 5/1/96 The mild conditions will continue to stabilise the snowpack. In summit gullies facing NE to NW where deeper accumulations remain the avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Category 2 Localised). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Wet snow above 650m.
