NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 6/1/96 Accumulations of moderately stabilised windslab have been laid down many steep N to NW facing slopes and gullies. The snowpack in these areas is relatively warm and humid but late heavy snow showers have created deep deposits on some sheltered NW facing slopes. Moderate (Category 2) hazard of avalanche. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 7/1/96 Moderate to heavy snow showers on strong SE to SW winds will lead to the development of poorly stabilised windslab on steep, sheltered NW to NE facing slopes and gullies. Avalanche activity is likely in these areas especially after the onset of warmer temperatures and rain at all levels later on Sunday. Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Reasonable cover above 800m. ICING: Variable, but some slight improvement likely as the freezing level fluctuates. COMMENT: Unpleasant mountain conditions with high winds for a time on Sunday. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 6/1/96 Fresh snow overnight has formed localised areas of slab, however these are restricted to NW, N and NE aspects above 900m, and tend to be rather small in area. There this new snow exists, the avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2 Localised). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 7/1/96 Snow is expected overnight, turning to rain at all levels on Sunday morning. Localised areas of unstable snow will still exist, mainly on NW, N and NE aspects, where the avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Category 2 Localised). The snowpack will thaw at all levels on Sunday. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Fresh snow above 900m. ICING: Freezing level rising above the summits on Sunday. COMMENT: Storm force winds continuing. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 6/1/96 Colder conditions have further stabilised the snowpack and deposited a trace of new snow above 800m.Where deeper snow remains mainly in summit gullies and corrie headwalls the avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 7/1/96 Gale force SE winds bringing snow to 800m then rain to all levels will again saturate the snowpack. In summit gullies and upper reaches of corrie headwalls facing W to NE accumulations of wet snow will collect.Where deeper deposits lie over old snow the avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3 Localised). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Wet snow above 650m. ICING: Melting ice above 650m. COMMENT: Gusts up to 80mph forecast over summits. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
