The avalanche hazard remains Low (Category 1) AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SAT 6/1/96 Snow showers and storm force SE winds are likely to deposit some fresh windslab during the day, primarily on high NW facing slopes and gullies above 900m where the avalanche hazard will increase to Moderate (Category 2) CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Fair on plateau areas, patchy below 800m ICING: Improving with a return to slightly colder conditions COMMENT: Difficult gusty mountain conditions expected on summits. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS FRI 5/1/96 Thaw conditions to 1200m have produced a moist and generally stable snowpack. Freezing conditions above 1200m have maintained localised areas of fresh snow on the upper reaches of Ben Nevis. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SAT 6/1/96 A wet and generally warm air flow will maintain thaw conditions at all levels. Sleet is expected at higher levels overnight and on Saturday morning, which will have little effect on the existing snowpack stability. The avalanche hazard will remain Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Limited snow cover, main accumulations in Number 2 and Observatory gullies on Ben Nevis. ICING: Freezing level remaining above the summits. COMMENT: Difficult mountain conditions expected on Saturday. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS FRI 5/1/96 The mild conditions have greatly reduced and stabilised the snowpack.Where snow remains in gullies and corrie headwalls above 750m the avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SAT 6/1/96 The snowpack will continue to stabilise and remain wet with rain at all levels.Where larger deposits of snow lie in summit gullies and corrie headwalls above 750m the avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Wet snow above 650m. ICING: Melting ice above 650m.
