NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 9/1/96 A moist and reasonably well consolidated snowpack exists in most locations. Moderate (Category 2) hazard of avalanche. Some slumped cornices noted on the rim of the Northern Corries. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 10/1/96 Somewhat more wintry weather with light snow showers will lead to the build up of patches of windslab on steep N to NE slopes and gullies above 900m. Moderate (Category 2) hazard of avalanche in these areas. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Wet snow at all levels on Tuesday. Patchy below 750m. ICING: Expected to improve a little in colder temperatures. Might be some reasonable sport in easier gully lines in N.Corries as neve improves. COMMENT: LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 9/1/96 Thawing of the snowpack and heavy rain has persisted at all levels throughout the day. Remaining snow is restricted to gullies and corrie headwalls above 900m. This remaining snow is moist and moderately well bonded. The avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2 Localised). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 10/1/96 Overnight and tomorrow, snow showers accompanied by moderate will cause fresh unstable snow to form on lee slopes and other sheltered locations. Localised areas of unstable windslab will be present on NE, N and NW aspects above 900m. Where this fresh windslab exists the avalanche hazard will increase to Considerable (Category 3 Localised). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Light snow fall overnight, lying to 700m. ICING: Ice will be present on paths and slopes above 900m. COMMENT: Limited ice remaining, in Coire na Ciste, Ben Nevis. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 9/1/96 Heavy rain at all levels has reduced and thoroughly moistened the snowpack. The remaining snowpack is generally stable with greatest accumulations above 850m on NW through to NE slopes. On steeper slopes wet snow slides constitute Moderate (Category 2 Localised) avalanche hazard AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 10/1/96 Colder conditions will stabilize the existing snowpack. Strong winds will deposit areas of shallow windslab on N through to E slopes and sheltered summit gullies above 800m. These deposits are not expected to be great. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Category 2) where windslab forms on old snow CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Wet snow above 800m ICING: Thawing ice above 800m COMMENT: Poor climbing conditions due to thaw -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
