LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS WED 10/1/96 Colder temperatures overnight have stabilised the existing snowpack. Some light snow showers have started to deposit fresh accumulations of windslab. These accumulations are generally small in area, and restricted to sheltered areas, mainly N and NE aspects above 1000m. Where this fresh snow exists, the avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2). Elsewhere the snowpack is generally stable. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK THU 11/1/96 Light showers are expected overnight and tomorrow, increasingly turning to rain during the day. This will have little effect on the existing snow stability. Small areas of unstable snow will still be present, mainly on N and NE aspects above 1000m. Where this snow exists, the avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Category 2). Elsewhere the snowpack will be generally stable. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Main accumulations are on NW, N and NE aspects above 1000m. ICING: Old snow and surface water is frozen above 850m. COMMENT: Gale force winds are expected again on Thursday. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS WED 10/1/96 Colder dry conditions have stabilised the snowpack forming a hard icy crust in places. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1) AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK THU 11/1/96 Strengthening southerly winds and light snowfall will form shallow deposits of windslab on NW through to NE slopes and sheltered summit gullies above 900m. These deposits are not expected to be great. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Category 2 Localised) where windslab forms on older snow. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow above 800m ICING: Ice above 800m COMMENT: Snowpack has a hard icy surface in places, dont forget your crampons & axe ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS WED 10/1/9 The recent melt-freeze cycle has re-frozen the top layers of the snowpack in most locations. Low (Category 2) hazard of avalanche. Hard, icy or crusty conditions prevail above 750m. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK THU 11/1/96 Some snow flurries are possible on strengthening S to SE winds which may lead to the formation of patches of windslab on some sheltered NW to N facing aspects. Moderate (Category 2) hazard of avalanche wherever windslab build up is greatest. The remainder of the snowpack is expected to remain very stable. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Very patchy below 850m with boilerplate or breakable melt/freeze crust in many areas on Weds. ICING: Ice pitches still relatively poorly developed but many gully lines are providing good entertainment. COMMENT: Looking windy for the latter part of Thursday. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
