NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS THU 11/1/96 Rain has moistened the snowpack at all elevations. A few patches of wet snow have been deposited on some N facing slopes and gullies above 1050m. In general, the snowpack is thawing but stable. Low (Category 1) hazard of avalanche. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK FRI 12/1/96 SE winds and some sleet or snow showers may combine to deposit some wet snow on N to NW aspects above 1000m. Moderate (Category 2) hazard of avalanche wherever new snow accumulations are greatest. The remainder of the snowpack is expected to remain stable. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Thawing, wet snow at all levels. Very patchy cover below 800m. ICING: Not as bad as you might think, but not improving in wet, thaw conditions. COMMENT: Poor mountain conditions likely on Friday. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS THU 11/1/96 Small localised areas of unstable snow exist, but are generally restricted to sheltered locations on NW, N and NE aspects above 1000m. Where this snow exists, the avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2). Elsewhere the snowpack is generally stable. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK FRI 12/1/96 Showers starting as sleet and turning to rain by Friday morning are expected throughout the area. Small areas of unstable snow will still be present earlier on Friday. These will generally be restricted to NW, N and NE aspects above 1000m. Where this snow exists, the avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Category 2). As the day progresses, all the existing snow will start to stabilise. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Main accumulations are on NW, N and NE aspects above 1000m. ICING: Thaw conditions. COMMENT: Difficult mountain conditions.. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS WED 10/1/96 Colder dry conditions have stabilised the snowpack forming a hard icy crust in places. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1) AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK THU 11/1/96 Strengthening southerly winds and light snowfall will form shallow deposits of windslab on NW through to NE slopes and sheltered summit gullies above 900m. These deposits are not expected to be great. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Category 2 Localised) where windslab forms on older snow. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow above 800m ICING: Ice above 800m COMMENT: Snowpack has a hard icy surface in places, dont forget your crampons & axe ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RE-TRANSMISSION.
