NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS FRI 12/1/96 Rain has again moistened the snowpack at all levels. The patches of wet snow that accumulated overnight on some N facing aspects above 1100m have now consolidated. The snowpack in most locations is thawing but stable. Low (Category 1) hazard of avalanche. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SAT 13/1/96 S to SW winds and sleety snow showers may combine to deposit some wet snow on N to NE aspects above 1100m. Moderate (Category 2) hazard of avalanche wherever new snow accumlations are greatest. The remainder of the snowpack will continue to thaw but is expected to remain stable. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Thawing, wet snow at all levels. Sustained mild temps. have severely depleted the snowcover below 900m. ICING: Gully lines still remain complete if narrow in a few places. No improvement to neve or ice development likely in thaw conditions. COMMENT: No comment.......... LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS FRI 12/1/96 Remaining snow is restricted to gullies with a Northerly aspect, above 1050m. The snowpack is moist and generally stable at all levels. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SAT 13/1/96 Any fresh snow fall will be restricted to the uppermost slopes of Ben Nevis. Small areas of fresh unstable windslab may be present in gullies with a NE, N and NW aspect above 1100m. Where this fresh windslab exists the avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Category 2). Elsewhere the remaining snow will continue to thaw. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Remaining snow at the tops of Northerly facing gullies, above 1100m. ICING: Any remaining ice is thawing rapidly. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS FRI 12/1/96 The snowpack is firm and well stabilised in summit gullies and corrie headwalls above 800m.The avalanche hazard is Low (Cat 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SAT 13/1/96 Rain showers overnight will soften and moisten the snowpack at all levels.In steeper summit gullies and corrie headwalls the avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Cat 2).
