NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 13/1/96 The snowpack is moist and thawing but stable at all elevations. Overnight wet snow has consolidated on all N aspects above 1000m. Low (Category 1) hazard of avalanche. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 14/1/96 Some moderate to light rain showers through the period will continue to moisten the snowpack but bring little change to the current Low (Category 1) hazard of avalanche. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Very patchy below 940m. and thawing at all levels. ICING: Easier gully routes offer the best sport in the present conditions. Free water noted on many ice pitches. Buttresses routes remain poor. COMMENT: Thaw conditions likely to prevail until the middle of next week. Falling ice could become a serious hazard. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 15/1/96 Overnight, some fresh wet snow has fallen above 1250m. Where this snow exists, there are some localised surface instabilities, and the avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2). Any remaining patches of snow below this altitude are generally stable. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 16/1/96 The wet weather is expected to continue, with the freezing level remaining just above the summits. Some wet snow instabilities will still be present above 1250m, where the avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Category 2). Elsewhere, any remaining snow will be wet and generally stable. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Patchy cover of wet snow exists above 1000m. ICING: Snow remaining wet at all levels. COMMENT: GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 15/1/96 The continuing rain showers at all levels have rendered the snowpack soft and moist.Where deeper deposits of snow lie the avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 16/1/96 The mild southerly airflow will further reduce the soft wet snowpack.Greatest accumulations remain in summit gullies and corrie headwalls facing N to NW above 800m.In these areas the avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1).
