AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 17/1/96 The strengthening southerly airflow with light to moderate rain or sleet will maintain the snowpack in a soft wet condition Greatest accumulations remain in summit gullies and corrie headwalls facing N to NW above 800m.In these areas the avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Wet snow above 800m in isolated areas ICING: Patches of thawing ice above 800m COMMENT: Poor climbing conditions due to prolonged thaw ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 16/1/96 A sparse and stable snowpack prevails. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 17/1/96 Slightly colder conditions with some sleet on summits. This is not expected to bring any significant change to the current avalanche hazard which remains Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Sparse cover, becoming hard underfoot in plateau areas. ICING: Improving with the return of slightly colder conditions. COMMENT: Strong SW winds, with gusts up to 80 mph, making difficult mountain conditions. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 16/1/96 A patchy snow cover exists above 1000m. This snow is slowly thawing and is generally stable. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 17/1/96 Continuing thaw conditions will have little effect on the existing snowpack. A patchy snowpack exists above 1000m, which will be moist and generally stable. The avalanche hazard will remain Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Patchy cover of snow above 1000m. ICING: Snow will continue to thaw at all levels.
